Received and ARC from Net Gallery in return for an honest review.
My first time reading this author thought the beginning went a little slow for my taste. However, there was so much back information given by the author that helped the story along.
The story is about a young woman named Paige who was a change of life baby, the youngest of five children by ten years. Paige’s parents owned and ran The High Altitude Cafe` it was a gathering place where all of her family worked. Since her parents and siblings worked at the Cafe`Grandma Lou stepped up to raise Paige that was until Grandma Lou diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and passed by the disease. Paige had a degree in Kinesiology and was working at the Walker Mountain Ranch owned by Bryce Walker. Paige gave hiking, horseback riding, and white water rafting lessons/tours of the mountains. She was working on a therapy program for Paraplegics that included horseback riding, and white water rafting. Paige spent most of her time at the Ranch she was like a little sister to Bryce. Similar to Paige’s family, Bryce hired family to work his ranch. Avery, Bryce’s pregnant wife, assisted running the ranch, his mother Elise, ran the kitchen, her assistant is Ruby James. Sawyer, Bryce’s cousin full-time police officer, part-time handyman.
Ben Hunter Noble III was Bryce’s college roommate who was running for Republican Texas Senator, just like his father & grandfather. Ben was working on a bill with his sister, Jennifer to give other paraplegics the access to alternative health care. Jennifer, the only survivor of a drunk driving accident, was left paralyzed. Hired by the Democratic Party, Ben’s unscrupulous ex-girlfriend, exposed doctored photos of blatant mistreatments of cattle and the Noble Ranch. Ben now needed to do something to gain back the public’s trust, interest, and votes. His mother Grace wants to donate more money to the zoo. His campaign manager Kevin Mackey wanted to invite the press to a different side of him, the environmentalist. Only one small problem he wasn’t an environmentalist. Ben comes up with donating the family’s property next to Walker Ranch. Time to get in touch with his old college roommate Bryce Walker.
October is an awareness month for breast cancer and domestic abuse. Ruby James may be a victim of domestic abuse. Domestic Abuse is an understated problem worldwide, kudos for authors courageous enough to put it out there for discussion. Not giving away any spoilers, so you need to read the book to find out what happens in this excellent story.
